The Roman Mosaic Pattern Database

The database is an ongoing project which was started in 2010. I've been on a mission to understand how the Roman craftsmen set out their geometric patterns. I've wanted to understand what the underlying geometry was, how did this relate to the end pattern that we see, and most importantly how did they actually lay the mosaics and manage to follow the patterns correctly?

More are being worked on for each sections so some sections have yet to be filled, keep an eye on the blog and my Facebook page for updates. Below are the three main sections of the database.

  1. Tracing patterns - patterns that are the full size for your mosaic, you just use carbon copy paper to transfer the pattern onto your baseboard.
  2. Geometry - step by step guides that take you through drawing out the patterns using the geometry that underpins the patterns.
  3. Using a staff - how to set out the mosaics without drawing out any guidelines on the base.
