Using the staff & square - Shop

How did the Roman's set their geometric mosaics when they covered such a large area? Did they draw the pattern out, paint some guidelines or scratch marks onto the floor to guide them? It is possible they used one of these methods but what if you have a large room with perhaps 40 feet (12m) of border pattern around the edge?

One way is they used a staff, something myself and others have been working on for a few years now. Using a staff (a length of wood about 12" long) you can set out your mosaic without drawing out a pattern on your base.

These patterns are step by step guides to setting a geometric pattern mosaic without drawing all the pattern out.
