The purpose of this manual is for you to learn the skills and principles needed to begin creating copies of ancient mosaics. As you progress, hopefully, you will begin to look at a Roman floor mosaic with the same vision as a craftsman of 2,000 years ago. Not in some strange, esoteric way but in a very practical sense.
You need to learn The Rules, and you also need to develop what I term a method of working. This method allows you to make the best use of your time, to be able to consistently apply the Rules and to keep to the standard of work that you’ve set. It also ensures you don’t get so focussed on the few tesserae in front of your eyes that you forget the rest of the mosaic. In one square metre (3’ x 3’) there can be between 8,000 10,000 tesserae. You need a way to work which, although not fast, is methodical and consistent.
The PDF file is set out to make it easy to print out the relevant parts. The sections are individually numbered and the main ones to print off are sections 2 & 3. These are pages 15 - 35 for section 2 and page 36 - 52 for section 3.
As well as the manuals you will receive some of the patterns used in this work. They will be sent out to you as part of the manual. You can expect these within 48 hours of your order.
