This decorative mosaic is a copy of a Roman geoemtric pattern. Taken from a 6th century CE mosaic in Ravenna, Italy I have named it the dog bone pattern for want of a better title! A beautiful piece to do, it was very difficult at times as the pattern is just one part of a whole floor so I was having to keep in my head the rest of the pattern going further out.
The tesserae (mosaic tiles) are all an unglazed ceramic tile measuring, roughly 5mm x 5mm along each edge. Each piece has been hand cut down from 10mm x 10mm tesserae and then individual pieces have been shaped as needed.
