Solomon's knot motif

Solomon's knot motif

solomon knot full image

One of the most common motifs seen in a Roman mosaic..
The suggested way is:
• Place the five single white centre tesserae (CT)
• Set the main curved black lines
• Set the dark colours, (red and dark green)
• Then do the yellow and white lines.
• Set the red outer lines.
• Set the white areas between the red lines and the
knot.

Notice where the black lines curve around the four outer CT that
triangle shapes are used but on the lines of colour, keystone cuts are
used. Keystone shapes help the lines to 'flow', they are
more visually pleasing. Triangles are used around the CT because
the angle is too tight and 2 or 3 keystone shapes would be needed
which would take up too much time.
