The Mosaic from Roman Bath

The Mosaic at Roman Bath (UK)

The Roman baths at Bath (60 - 70CE) in the UK are famous but there are only two mosaics there. The only one at the baths is not accessible and the other, featured here, is from a villa site nearby. The mosaic has two hippocamps (sea creatures) and a dolphin.

Hippocampus & dolphin

The mosaic shows two sea creatures along with part of a dolphin. The stone used appears to be locally sourced plus terracotta for the red.

Standard of work

The mosaics are neatly done and have been well executed. The lines are clear and the figures are in proportion (for mythical creatures that is!). There is a slight variation in size to get the detail in the eyes but every other part is consistant.
